In the past 50 years Barbie has become a fashion icon and has mastered various occupations. In one sense a doll, in reality a representation of female achievements.
On March 9th 1959 the first Barbie doll made her debut at the American International Toy Fair in New York. Now approaching a 50th Anniversary, Barbie is an iconic figure especially for young girls. From the initial introduction in '59 Barbie filled the gap for children who still wanted to play with dolls but wanted something more. Still a doll, but no longer resembling a baby, Barbie became a hot item. Barbie's CreatorThe creator was Ruth Handler and her husband, a co-founder of Mattel, the world's largest toy maker. Ruth's inspiration was her own daughter. According to an article in Nylon magazine Handler created Barbie "to satisfy her young daughter's obsession with teenage life and fashion models" states Holly Siegel in the March issue. Barbie Becomes a HitAfter production and manufacturing that took place in Japan, approximately 350,000 Barbie's were sold in the first year. To own a Barbie the cost was $3.00. The very first Barbie wore a hand-stitched black and white zebra striped swimsuit. Her hair color was available in both blonde and brunette and was worn in a ponytail. Always reflecting the trends, Barbie's outfits are in the hundreds. Barbie's Influence on the WorldWhile over the years there have been controversies and debates over Barbie's measurements and body image, Barbie's occupations offer a different perspective. According to Forbes, Barbie has 108 jobs on her resume. Although her measurements don't add up ,if she were a real person "vital statistics have been estimated at 36 inches (chest), 18 inches (waist) and 33 inches for the hips" according to Wikipedia, her advancements in the work force keeps Barbie high on selling lists.
