After Tituba's amazing confession specters and flying women are seen throughout Salem.

Perhaps Tituba's telling, at the Salem Witch Inquisition of fury creatures, a man dressed in black, and that Sarah Good and Sarah Osborne had tried to make her cut off the head of Ann Putnam, Jr. was too much for the afflicted girls. These girls now went into their bewitched fits. Tituba quickly supplied the information that it was not she who was tormenting the girls, but Sarah Good who was doing it.

Tituba Has Bewitched Fit But Goes to Jail

The girls agreed that it was Good, but Elizabeth Hubbard went into a worse fit than usual. Tituba denied knowing who was causing Hubbard's fit and then the slave went into her own fit as though she, too, were afflicted.

If Tituba hoped that appearing to be bewitched would save her from the witch's prison she was mistaken. Off to jail she was sent where Sarah Good and Sarah Osborne awaited their own fate.

Hysteria and Terror Takes Over

After Tituba's strange confession hysteria and terror seemed to fill every corner of Salem Village. That evening, March 1, the husband of Mary Sibley who had suggested the witch cake, was visiting at the home of Dr. Griggs where the afflicted Elizabeth Hubbard lived. Suddenly Elizabeth cried out that Sarah Good, who was bodily locked in jail, was standing on the table with naked breast and legs. Sibley swung and struck with his staff where Elizabeth pointed. Elizabeth declared that he had struck the woman on the back.

The following morning the jailer claimed that Sarah's arm was bloody. This was taken as certain evidence that Good's specter had indeed visited the Griggs' home.

The same evening as Good's spectral visitation another man saw a strange beast lying on the ground that turned into "two or three women" who then flew away. He swore the three flying wenches were Sarah Good, Sarah Osborne, and Tituba. Another man claimed to have seen the same astounding thing.

And so it went, as terror was unleashed in Salem. Specters and shapes were seen everywhere. They could see, hear, and speak. They could also reach out and touch. They could remove themselves from their prison cells. And they could then travel by flying or merely "mysterious instant transmission."
