All of the states have a unique 'nickname' that refers to a special trait or property that the state in known for.
Many are obvious, but several are 'coined ' names.
Here is a rundown of the various states and their official and unofficial nicknames. Alabama is known officially as the 'Yellowhammer' state, and unofficially as the 'Heart of Dixie' and the 'Camellia' state; while Alaska's official nickname is the 'Last Frontier.' Arizona is known as the 'Grand Canyon' state and the 'Copper' state and Arkansas has an official nickname of the 'Natural' state, the 'Land of Opportunity' and the 'Razorback' state. California's official name is the 'Golden' state, and Colorado is known officially as the 'Centennial' state and unofficially as 'Colorful Colorado,' while Connecticut is called the 'Constitution' state and the 'Nutmeg' state. Delaware is known as the 'First' state, the 'Diamond' state, the 'Blue Hen' state and the 'Small Wonder,' and Florida is obviously known as the 'Sunshine' state. Georgia is commonly known as the 'Peach' state, the 'Empire of the South' and the 'Goober' state, and Hawaii goes by the 'Aloha' state or the 'Pineapple' state. Idaho is the 'Gem' state and the 'Spud' state; Illinois is known as the 'Prairie' state and the 'Lincoln' state while Indiana is well known as the 'Hoosier' state. Iowa goes by the 'Hawkeye' state. Kansas is the 'Sunflower' state and the 'Salt of the Earth,' and Louisiana has two names, the 'Pelican' state and the 'Sugar' state. Maine is called the 'Pine Tree' state while Maryland's name is the 'Old Line' state or the 'Free 'state. Massachusetts is known by two names, the 'Bay' state and the 'Old Colony' state, just as Michigan goes by the 'Great Lakes' state and the 'Wolverine' state names. Minnesota has four names: 'North Star' state, 'Gopher' state, 'Land of 10,000 Lakes' and the 'Bread and Butter ' state, but Mississippi is known simply as the 'Magnolia' state. Missouri is called the 'Show Me' state,Montana is known as the 'Treasure' state or the 'Big Sky' state, and Nebraska is officially the 'Corn Husker' state. Nevada is called the 'Silver' state, the 'Battle Born' state and the 'Sagebrush' state, New Hampshire goes by the 'Granite' state, and New Jersey is the 'Garden' state. New Mexico is the 'Land of Enchantment,' while New York has always been the “Empire' state. North Carolina is the 'Tar Heel' state or the 'Old North' state, and while North Dakota has three names; the 'Peace Garden' state, 'Flickertail' state and the 'Roughrider' state, Ohio has been the 'Buckeye' state since the middle of the 19th century, and is also known as the 'Mother of Presidents.' Oklahoma is the 'Sooner' state, Oregon is the 'Beaver' state, Pennsylvania goes by the 'Keystone' state or the 'Quaker' state and Rhode Island is the 'Ocean' state or “Little Rhody.' South Carolina is the 'Palmetto' state. Tennessee is known as the “volunteer' state or the 'Big Bend' state while Texas has always been called the 'Lone Star' state. Vermont is the 'Green Mountain' state, Virginia is the 'Old Dominion' state, Washington is called the 'Evergreen' state or the 'Chinook' state and West Virginia is the 'Mountain' state.
