Cotton Mather, an American Congregational minister in the late 1600's, was a true believer in witches, witchcraft, and demons. He was instrumental in assuring that numerous persons in Salem, Massachusetts were hung merely on spectral evidence alone. Much of this evidence was presented by a group of young Salem girls who fell into fits when any of the so-called witches tormented them.
