Yah, sure.

Let me guess. You'd most likely choose George Washington.
.
He might not want to dine with you.
.
Ever think of that?

- GW
Well, I might actually choose Lincoln. He'd be a better conversationalist. People tended to get so nervous around and enamored with Washington - and he himself could be rather standoffish - that social occasions with GW were awkward. That is, except for dancing with the ladies. He never lost his interest in or talent in that.

- GW's Travels
Ha, very funny. Yes he did sleep in a lot of different places, but (as far as we know) by himself or with Martha. ![]()
Seriously...most people don't know WHY there are so many "George Washington Slept Here" locations. The main reason is that he was always on-the-go as a young man. He was a surveyor and soldier during his teenage and young adult years. He didn't really 'settle down' until marriage.
Historians surmise that his strained relationship with his mother had a LOT to do with that.

My son just sent me a copy of Ray Raphael's book, http://www.amazon.com/Founding-Myths-Sto...
.
Are you familiar with it?

- Raphael
Yes, I'm familiar with it. Have skimmed some of it. Don't agree with a couple of his "myths." (Such as his attempted refutation, I believe, of George Washington's prayer at Valley Forge). But I'm sure he makes some great points otherwise. Will probably read it at some point.

- Richard Shenkman
Another author up your alley would be Richard Shenkman.
I read his Legends, Lies, and Cherished Myths of American History over 10 years ago, though I still own it (in some box somewhere, methinks). Once again, I don't agree with ALL his "myths." Like Raphael, he is given to spin. Some people 'spin' positive. Others are more cynical/negative. Shenkman is the latter, since he's trying to explode some of the more pollyanna myths. STILL....
Shenkman DOES make some great points (as does Raphael). You would like him, I'm certain of it.
Another Shenkman book that I couldn't put down is Presidential Ambition. AWESOME book! Absolutely incredible. Looks at the Presidents strictly from the perspective of their driving ambition. A VERY interesting book. You'd like that one too.
