Another author up your alley would be Richard Shenkman.

I read his Legends, Lies, and Cherished Myths of American History over 10 years ago, though I still own it (in some box somewhere, methinks). Once again, I don't agree with ALL his "myths." Like Raphael, he is given to spin. Some people 'spin' positive. Others are more cynical/negative. Shenkman is the latter, since he's trying to explode some of the more pollyanna myths. STILL....

Shenkman DOES make some great points (as does Raphael). You would like him, I'm certain of it.

Another Shenkman book that I couldn't put down is Presidential Ambition. AWESOME book! Absolutely incredible. Looks at the Presidents strictly from the perspective of their driving ambition. A VERY interesting book. You'd like that one too.
