Good blog post, John. A great book on this subject is Harry Jaffa's A New Birth of Freedom. He provides a very thorough and impressive analysis of Abraham Lincoln's moral opposition to slavery, which was always in tension with his legal understanding of the Constitution and the power of the presidency as well as his pragmatic desire to keep the Union together (or as much of it as he could).

Does anyone out there have any thoughts about whether or not the Civil War was about slavery? I seem to have been running into a lot of people who think there is some debate a bout this. What do you think?
